Carl

Hi! My name is... Carl (you'd never figure that out by yourself). The only system I currently have at home is a Nintendo DS, just like another staff member of this site :P I grew up playing a lot of Genesis when I was young. That's also the first and only system, until the DS, but I read a lot about what's happening in the videogame industry through gaming sites, because I think it's an interesting medium. Obviously it's funny to follow a medium that's evolving very rapidly as of this moment.. one year Nintendo is presenting the concept of using a handheld as a device for doing work-out with your brain, the next it's Wii Sports and later on Wii fit, and most lately it's Sega showing of an old game like Super Monkey Ball on the iphone, played simply by tilting the device. I guess the evolution of games and gaming devices will not stop in a long time.. dare I say ever? Since it's an industry that can morph into just about anything, there are no set tools that need to be taken into account and thus specifically define what constitutes a gaming device.. ok, granted, there are some: such as some kind of device that registers the users actions using either a controller or a camera; but define "users actions" and "controller" and you realize that it's a pretty open field. This is more or less the foundation of what Nintendo calls the blue ocean strategy, and, just to illustrate the point they make it apparent that they wont compete when it comes to the horsepower of the processor.

Sony showed same idea I had: MOTIONLOOK FOR 3D GAMES

06/03/2009 - 2:30 AM

Posted in Highlight, News | No comments

This was the idea I refered to in the article I posted just prior to when e3 started. I wrote that it would be possible that someone would show this new controls scheme utilizing the wiimote (or something similar) and that I would tell about it if no one showed it (or had thought about [...]

What Wii Fit Plus could be all about

06/02/2009 - 8:20 AM

Posted in News | No comments

Apart from the obvious inclusion of Motion+ compatability, there could be other changes to the gameplay mechanics as well, such as camera, to register body movement better, and perhaps the inclusion of those weights that you could put the wiimote and nunchuck in to effectively turn them into decent dumbbells. It’s especially the last addition [...]

Plus in Wii Fit Plus doesn’t refer to Motion+?

05/31/2009 - 10:54 AM

Posted in News | No comments

When I first heard about Wii Fit Plus I thought the word Plus in the title refered to Motion+ and thought no more about it, but as e3 is getting closer some sites report on the title and you get the impression it’s actually a completely new balance board, not just a new game disc [...]

Redefining game controls using Motion+ at e3

05/31/2009 - 5:22 AM

Posted in Highlight | No comments

The reason why there’s no questionmark is that… I will at least tell you about it if no one else does :P
It’s very simple, but it’s pretty awsome. We ought to see it this e3. Although there are things holding this argument back, such as the fact that we didn’t see it last e3 when [...]

3D-glasses rescuing movie industry? How about Wii-glasses as well?

05/15/2009 - 6:50 AM

Posted in Highlight | No comments

The movie industry is betting a lot of money that 3D-glasses will save potential blockbuster movies from being downloaded from the internet.
That’s fine, but they’re really just capable of one aspect…
Wouldn’t it be neat if Nintendo started a chanel for movies and shows and what not that allowed the user to watch content with Wii [...]

Wii running OnLive? Can it work?

OnLive, The Future of Gaming?

Would a “balance board+” be any fun?

03/14/2009 - 12:10 AM

Posted in Uncategorized | No comments

Maybe, but it probably wouldn’t be a big deal. I thought about it a little, and there are a couple of things you could do to alter the experience. One idea is that the balance board is placed on a stand and is balancing slightly in the air; obviously it’s attached to something, maybe a [...]

The breakdown of a review ought to be more “context sensitive”

03/09/2009 - 7:47 AM

Videogame reviews ought to be more “context sensitive”. Look, it’s pretty strange that so diverse type of genres as puzzles and action adventures are reviewed using the same kind of categorical framework. I mean, it’s not crazy, and it’s probably not even lazy, it’s just something that has been overlooked in my opinion. This practice [...]

Drama within IBM during 360, PS3 chip development

02/19/2009 - 1:08 PM

Do not read the article that is posted on the Wall Street Journal site about the book David Shippy (chief architect and technical leader of the PowerPC microprocessor for the Xbox 360 and PS3) and Mickie Phipps have written. The book recounts the “through his eyes” experience encompassing the tumultuous years Shippy experienced designing the Cell microprocessor chip as well as the 360 microprocessor chip. Check inside for more details.

How sophisticated AI does Motion+ need?

02/14/2009 - 10:21 AM

Posted in Uncategorized | No comments

Let’s make a simple app for the Wii: a table tennis game. Great. That has to be a simple endeavor… or not. Exactly how much horsepower do you need for the AI?
I mean, the computer needs to think and behave like a human with lifelike racket swings where you place the ball and do stop [...]

Narration with emotional impact, does it work?

02/03/2009 - 4:05 PM

The game made me do it
link to an article over at Versus CluClu Land that I base this article on.
An article about narration in games with shooter mechanics; now that’s always an interesting read, or at least I tend to like articles on such topics, or similar topics. In a sense it’s a bit like [...]

Wii’s lack of memory, a bottle-neck?

01/27/2009 - 6:23 AM

Posted in Uncategorized | 1 comment

Obviously not a complete lack of memory, just not enough for software and games that would require more than 88mb of memory… bc there isn’t more memory :)  This doesn’t mean the end, Nintendo could of course allow external SD storage sticks to work as memory, a pretty cheap solution but a functional one.
But is it [...]

Sixenses 3D painting and modeling demo, Nintendo where are you?

01/11/2009 - 1:49 PM

Posted in Uncategorized | No comments

Why haven’t we seen this on Wii? And don’t tell me it’s because the Wii motion sensing is so lacking in precision that it hasn’t been possible to do anything remotely similar to what Sixense showed at CES. That’s not a viable explanation, it only explains the obvious: that Sixense tech is possible of more [...]

Do people understand the potential for a high precision 3D cursor?

12/22/2008 - 4:13 AM

Posted in Uncategorized | No comments

The Wii has a high precision 3D cursor, and it is getting better with the new attachment next year. Okey, so I wrote not long ago that I wouldn’t write any more game related ideas, but I’ll just write one here for the sake of this article.
Example of a genre that benefits tremendously from this [...]

The DSi has nothing to counter the iPhone with

12/14/2008 - 3:57 PM

Posted in Uncategorized | 2 comments

Obviously the DSi is Nintendos late attempt at trying to keep up with what Apple is doing on the handheld side. In a sense it doesn’t matter much to them anyways, people will still buy the DS, but they do it more to show that they are awake and aware of their suroundings, and they also [...]

Brütal Legend: the best videogame ever made when released

It’s a fact we all can agree on. “Hey, we haven’t played the game yet!”. I’m not interested in your opinion since it’s wrong, but if you reason this way you’re really just one in a million. Yeah, you can write a comment below about how wrong I am.. if you want to stick out [...]

Where the hell did creativity go?

12/04/2008 - 3:50 PM

Posted in Uncategorized | No comments

It’s easy to mock me for writing this post. “Hey, this guy think’s he’s really creative, and have creative ideas, and now he makes an article where he laments about how dead the industry is.” It’s true but unimportant as a critisism towards me, since it doesn’t point at anything negative about me as a [...]

I’ll stop writing ideas (game-, hardware-)

11/30/2008 - 10:15 AM

Posted in Uncategorized | 1 comment

This doesn’t mean I wont continue writing articles, but there wont be any about ideas that I have, since that’s just an exercise in frustration. Until recently I felt that it was good to write about fairly original ideas so that anyone could read about them, such as in articles on news sites like this one. [...]

End the onslaugt of “Dogz and Catz 12″ titles…

11/26/2008 - 12:12 PM

When the Gamecube had been on the market a while and had sold poorly, Nintendo made the decision to let 3d party developers keep a large majority of the revenues from their game sales, which doesn’t sound like that a big deal, but on their previous consoles Nintendo took a hefty share of the profits [...]
