Would a “balance board+” be any fun?
Maybe, but it probably wouldn’t be a big deal. I thought about it a little, and there are a couple of things you could do to alter the experience. One idea is that the balance board is placed on a stand and is balancing slightly in the air; obviously it’s attached to something, maybe a large semi-sphere or something. The user shouldn’t be able to tip the balance board (or slightly maybe) instead this was to allow the user to actually turn the board. So sure, that’s somewhat interesting, and if you imagined you’d be able to place two of these boards together you’d suddenly have a pretty accurate version of skiing for example. I know what you’re thinking: but with all these added modifications would there really be any use of the fundamental mechanics of the actual balance board, the weight detectors that reads how the user is standing on the board? Well of course there would be. I can illustrate what I want with another idea, that’s simpler, but that isn’t as immersive. If we say the user had to put on some kind of infrared straps on his/her ankles then the Wii could try and determine where the user’s feet where placed on the board more accurately, not just the balance.
Another thing completely is that it could be pretty fun if a product like EA Sports Active allowed the user to place something on the board before a certain activity, and had the balance board, or scale, weight whatever the user put on it, and then allow the user to use this thing in his/her exercise as some kind of dumbbell, but then again, allowing that and you’d begin to question the whole idea of doing exercises on a board in your living room and following the strict regime of a videogame instead of just watching TV while doing the same exercises.
