Onslaught from Hudson has been out awhile on the Wii ware platform. The game looked highly interesting to me especially a first person shooter from Hudson, which from my knowledge never made a FPS game before. So just recently, I decided to purchase the wii ware title and give it a spin.

I purchased it and downloaded it. I expected some half-ass first person shooter or some shovelware, no disrespect for Hudson, which was on Wii ware. I was quite interested that Hudson made a first person shooter. This first person shooter is about shooting aliens ala Starship Troopers but without the bad corridors. It does have one thing in common the story is downright bad but I did not let that stop me as I am used to B movies anyhow. I have played the story level for the past couple days and find that this is enough gameplay time to review the game.

Let me tell you this the shooting ability in this game is awesome from an old school gamer aspect as you point and press the B button to shoot. You can press the B button for single shots if your using say the shotgun or the rocket launcher or just hold the B button for instant machine gun fun with the machine gun. Yep it is that simple. I found that using a left to right wiggling motion seems to get all of the alien beasts.onslaught-4Jumping back to the story you are an earthling dropped on a planet and you must destroy bugs. On your way, you meet two elite force troops with bad attitudes, which are surprised that a normal earthling has survived so far (really it wasn’t that hard to get to this point of the story). Anyhow, the story progresses while you play and the characters talk back and forth during gameplay. I found that just ignoring the dialog and just playing the game was sufficient though at times when the characters said you need to get back to the ship to protect it you might want to listen as there are a couple of levels that require you to save something.

There are thirteen levels, which is actually good when you think about it since the game is a Wii Ware title and most of the Wii Ware titles are very small. Each level has some special task for you to do such as saving a ship, supplies, or another member. There are several weapons to use. Right off the bat you have a shotgun, machine gun semi and full automatic versions, a rocket launcher, some grenades, and an energy whip that is cool but hard to control. Honestly, the grenades and Energy whip I hardly used when playing the story mode. If you play through the game enough, you will find more weapons or updated weapons to use on your adventure of bug shooting. The basics of the game are to gain as much points as possible and get a good ranking for each level. S for what I take is super and A,B,C,D, etc for how bad you did. For the most part I got several S’s and through out down to the C’s.

Lets jump in to the gritty of the game meaning graphics, audio, and music. By no means does this game look as good as other games such as Metroid or the up coming Conduit but it is good enough. Mostly the graphics are done well with the character models and enemy models everything else is so so or meh. In a way, it seems like your playing a moderately drawn Metroid.

Jumping to the audio and music section, I can say the audio is good for shooting sounds and enemy noises. One thing I would do though is to turn down or turn off the Wii-mote speaker as it does play some sounds as your character is screaming when hurt or when your comrades are stating are you all right several times which also plays on the screen. Also, when you do very well when shooting your enemies your comrades or computer system says good job, or excellent, or the very annoying “that is why your still a kid”. Sliding to the music side of the game I can say the music is really done well so much so that I would actually buy the soundtrack or if I could downloading I would. It is very sci-fi sounding and a couple of the songs sound very familiar to songs I have heard in movies and other games.

As you may tell, this is a rushed review but the points are all here. I liked Onslaught from Hudson. I recommend this game to all gamers especially old school gamers. I would love to see sequel of this but with a better storyline or an actual disc based game with more love put into it graphically.
