Nintendo: lots of casual games, few hardcore titles
Maybe they have an ok amount of 3d party support, but that they just don’t get many studios that make blockbuster titles for the core players? Or I mean, ok, so obviously that’s a fact. Looking at Sonys and Microsofts press conference and comparing them with Nintendos, and it’s obvious that they have understood how to approach these 3d party developers better. Some are striving for both mass-market appeal and core gamer appeal–just like Nintendo–such as Ubi and EA, who both produce titles for all three consoles. But the problem is that since Nintendos console is so underpowered compared to the other two, no other developer are really going to spend big money on making a new strong adventure or action game IP for Nintendos console. And those who make these kind of IP’s for Sony and Microsoft can’t allocate resources to a development team that needs to make a down scaled version of the PS3 and Xbox games. PS3 and Xbox are very similar in horsepower so it makes sense for a developer to produce a title simultaneously for both, but Nintendos console is so underpowered that it would mean some seriously drastic measures to make the same title work for their console, and since Nintendo have shown this e3 that they can’t even make any new blockbuster titles themselves on a yearly basis, well, then it’s saying bye bye to all 3d party support in strong new action- adventure IP’s this generation of consoles. What’s Nintendos response to that? They are not competing with Microsoft and Sony, well then they’re digging their own grave when it comes to the core demographic.
They should maybe be more aggressive seeking 3d party support, and it’s not like it really would be difficult for them. Sure they would never get a developer like the one making gears of war, but well, a minor problem, also, I’ve never really understood that title, or I mean, I guess it’s supposed to be a game about this extremely stereotyped macho, brutal character, that’s fine with me, but it’s done a bit like a joke right? I mean, they’ve exaggerated all that macho stuff on purpose right? Anyways, so that developer wont do anything for Nintendo and that’s ok. The developer for Sony that makes Resistance and Ratchet and Clank? Hey, who knows. No one cares who Nintendo can get on board, as long as they get someone on board that can deliver a great action adventure IP for them, because obviously they need more 3d party support on that front.
How did Microsoft go about when they started up? Besides buying Rare for ridiculous amounts of money they went to developers who previously had only made games for the PC market. Smart. Mass Effect, Fable, titles like that. Titles that are apparently supposed to be very deep. And then there’s Brütal Legend.
The killer for Nintendo would be if they could find a developer that could deliver strong new IP’s with really great characters. Those titles sell insane amounts. It’s good for Nintendo that they have Aunoma, and that they have very talented artists working under them. Right out of the blue, some of the people who worked for capcom the previous console generation would be great for Nintendo. The guys behind Veautiful Joe and Resident Evil 4. Nintendo should have invested in them a lot after that. It’s also strange that Nintendo of American never did anything to voe some of the bigger developers of PC titles. Now it’s obviously a bit late to the game.
But what I’ve mentioned here, and what this article is all about: Nintendo needs to more aggressively seek out 3d party developers for their system.
